How to Clean Your Fridge & Freezer: 5 Tried-and-Tested Tips

Brought to you by Happy Nest Cleaning – Making Northern Ireland Shine!

Your fridge and freezer work around the clock to keep your food fresh, but how often do you give them a proper clean? With spills, crumbs, and forgotten leftovers, these hardworking appliances can quickly become unhygienic without regular maintenance. At Happy Nest Cleaning, we believe that a clean kitchen starts with a clean fridge and freezer – so we’ve gathered 5 tried-and-tested tips from cleaning experts across the web to help you get yours sparkling again.

1. Empty and Unplug First

Before you begin, remove all food items and unplug the appliance (especially for the freezer to allow for defrosting). Place perishable items in a cooler with ice packs or store them temporarily in a neighbour’s fridge if needed. This makes cleaning easier and safer, and avoids wasting energy while the doors are open.

2. Use a Baking Soda Solution for Natural Cleaning

Avoid harsh chemicals in food storage areas. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 litre of warm water to create a gentle, effective cleaner. This solution helps remove stains, neutralises odours, and is completely food-safe.

3. Soak Shelves and Drawers Separately

Take out all removable parts like shelves and drawers, and let them soak in warm soapy water while you clean the inside. Don’t rush to scrub glass shelves with cold water – they can crack from sudden temperature changes! Let them warm to room temperature first if needed.

4. Use a Toothbrush for Crevices

Got stubborn grime around seals or in small corners? A soft-bristled toothbrush is perfect for those tight spots. Dip it in your baking soda solution or a bit of vinegar and scrub gently to lift hidden dirt and mildew.

5. Keep It Fresh with a Natural Deodoriser

Once clean and dry, place an open box of baking soda or a small dish of coffee grounds inside your fridge and freezer. These natural deodorisers help absorb lingering smells and keep your appliance smelling fresh between cleans.

Bonus Tip: Set a Reminder

To maintain a hygienic and fresh appliance, aim to deep clean your fridge every 3–4 months, and defrost the freezer at least twice a year, depending on ice build-up.

Keeping your fridge and freezer clean doesn’t have to be a chore. But if you’d rather leave it to the pros, we’re here to help! At Happy Nest Cleaning, we offer full kitchen and appliance cleans.
